Left something in a Hertz rental? Here's how to get it back

The short answer: in the US, Hertz handles items left in rental cars through its Lost & Found portal, linked from Hertz's customer support page. You pick the location where you returned or exchanged the car and file a report there.

If your location isn't listed, the portal says to contact that location directly.

Checked on October 28, 2026 against Hertz's customer support page. This is an independent guide from TangoTag, not Hertz's own page, and policies change, so confirm anything important there.

How to report it

  1. Open Hertz's customer support page and follow "To contact us for Lost and Found inquiries in the US." It opens the Hertz Lost & Found portal.
  2. Choose the location where you returned or exchanged the car, then describe the item.
  3. If your location isn't in the list, call or visit that Hertz location directly, as the portal says.
  4. Hertz's general support form also has a question type for "I left something in the vehicle," if you'd rather write to support.

Move fast

Rental cars are cleaned and rented out again quickly. Report it the same day if you can, with your rental agreement number, the car's make, model and plate if you have them, and where in the car you left it.

Hertz doesn't say on these pages how long it keeps found items or whether it charges to ship them.

Next time

A lost-and-found form is where things wait. Something with a way to reach its owner usually goes home faster: the cleaner, driver or passenger who finds it can contact you directly instead of hoping it reaches the right desk.

A TangoTag sticker on your bag, keys or laptop does that. Whoever finds it scans the code with their phone camera and can call, text or leave you a note, without seeing your address. It isn't a tracker and can't show where something is; it only helps when a person finds it and scans it. How it works.
