Found something?

Found AirPods? How to get them back to the owner.

The short answer: if you have an iPhone, open the Find My app, go to the Items tab, scroll to the bottom and tap Identify Found Item. Apple says it helps you learn about AirPods that have been separated from their owner. If the owner has turned on Lost Mode or Show Contact Info, they've chosen to share a way for a finder to contact them.

If that doesn't reach them, hand the AirPods to the lost and found where you found them. The owner can usually see roughly where they are in Find My.

Checked on October 28, 2026 against Apple's support pages on items separated from their owner and finding lost AirPods. This is an independent guide from TangoTag, not Apple's.

If you just found them

  1. Look around first. AirPods usually fall out of a pocket or bag a few minutes before someone notices. Ask nearby, or the staff.
  2. Check the case. Some people put a name, an engraving or a lost-and-found sticker on it.
  3. Use Find My on an iPhone. Items tab, scroll to the bottom, Identify Found Item.
  4. Hand them in where you found them: the shop, gym, venue, airline or transit lost and found. Say exactly where you found them.

The owner can play a sound on them, see them on a map and mark them as lost from their own phone, so leaving them with staff at the place you found them is often the fastest way home.

They're still linked to the owner

AirPods set up with Find My keep showing up on the owner's map, and the owner can mark them as lost. If they travel with you, your iPhone may even show an alert such as "AirPods Detected" or "AirPods Pro Detected."

If the case has a QR sticker

Point your phone camera at it. If it's a TangoTag, the page lets you call, text or leave the owner a note, depending on what they chose, and they get it by email right away. No app or account needed. See the page a finder gets.

Lose AirPods yourself?

Find My shows you where they are, but the person holding them can only reach you if you've turned on Lost Mode or Show Contact Info. A small TangoTag sticker on the case lets anyone who finds them contact you with any phone, without seeing your number or address unless you choose to show them. It isn't a tracker; it helps when a person finds the case and scans it.
